Das Minis­te­ri­um hieß zuletzt Міністерство культури та стратегічних комунікацій України (Minis­try of Cul­tu­re and Stra­te­gic Com­mu­ni­ca­ti­ons of Ukrai­ne). Ende Okto­ber 2025 (genau­er: durch Beschluss des Kabi­netts der Minis­ter der Ukrai­ne vom 29. Okto­ber 2025, постановa № 1396, wirk­sam ab 31. Okto­ber 2025) wur­de es in Міністерство культури України (Minis­try of Cul­tu­re of Ukrai­ne) umbe­nannt. Dies geschah, nach­dem die Auf­ga­ben im Bereich stra­te­gi­scher Kom­mu­ni­ka­tio­nen aus­ge­glie­dert bzw. abge­trennt wer­den sollten/ wur­den – wie bereits im August 2025 von der dama­li­gen kom­mis­sa­ri­schen Minis­te­rin Tetya­na Berezh­na angekündigt.

The Insti­tu­te of Mass Infor­ma­ti­on (IMI) is a media NGO that has been ope­ra­ting sin­ce 1996. IMI defends the rights of jour­na­lists, ana­ly­zes the media sphe­re and covers media-related events, coun­ter­acts pro­pa­gan­da and dis­in­for­ma­ti­on, and pro­vi­des media with pro­tec­ti­ve equip­ment for trips to the com­bat zone during the Russian-Ukrainian war sin­ce 2014. IMI has been con­duc­ting the only moni­to­ring of free­dom of speech in Ukrai­ne and a list of trans­pa­rent and respon­si­ble online media, and docu­ments Russia’s media cri­mes in the war against Ukrai­ne. IMI has repre­sen­ta­ti­ves in 20 regi­ons of Ukrai­ne and a net­work of “Media­ba­se” hubs for unin­ter­rup­ted sup­port of jour­na­lists. Among IMI’s part­ners is “Repor­ters Without Bor­ders”, and the orga­niz­a­ti­on is also a mem­ber of the Inter­na­tio­nal Free­dom of Expres­si­on (IFEX) network.

The first inter­na­tio­nal part­ner of IMI was the French School of Jour­na­lism (Éco­le du Lou­vre). In coope­ra­ti­on with the jour­na­lism facul­ties of Taras Shev­chen­ko Natio­nal Uni­ver­si­ty of Kyiv, the Natio­nal Uni­ver­si­ty of Kyiv-Mohyla Aca­de­my, Zapo­rizhzhia Natio­nal Uni­ver­si­ty, Boh­dan Khmel­nyts­ky Natio­nal Uni­ver­si­ty of Cher­k­a­sy, and Ivan Fran­ko Natio­nal Uni­ver­si­ty of Lviv—as well as with the par­ti­ci­pa­ti­on of French teachers—new jour­na­lism cur­ri­cu­la were deve­lo­ped. Based on the­se cur­ri­cu­la, spe­cia­li­zed cour­ses were taught in hig­her edu­ca­ti­on insti­tu­ti­ons, and about 15 text­books were publis­hed. One of the most famous was the Journalist’s Gui­de, which beca­me wide­ly used among jour­na­lism stu­dents in the 1990s and ear­ly 2000s.

After a long break, Ukrin­form retur­ned to the White List , impro­ving its balan­ce and demons­tra­ting a respon­si­ble atti­tu­de towards its audience.

Artem Zveny­ho­rods­kyi tra­vel­led 3,000 kilo­me­tres just to hear the Ukrai­ni­an natio­nal anthem for the first time at a rail­way sta­ti­on. Front­li­ner traces their sto­ries which expo­se how the occup­a­ti­on sys­tem punis­hes dis­sent and turns retur­ning home into an ordeal.

Front­li­ner is an inde­pen­dent Ukrai­ni­an repor­ting media out­let covering the ongo­ing Russian-Ukrainian war . It was foun­ded in 2021 by Andriy Dubchak , a repor­ter, jour­na­list, and win­ner of nume­rous awards and pri­zes, inclu­ding a fina­list for the Geor­gy Gong­ad­ze Pri­ze (2023) [ 1 ] .

The focus is on events on the front lines, in recent­ly libe­ra­ted ter­ri­to­ries, and in the rear; docu­men­ting evi­dence and eye­wit­ness accounts of Rus­si­an war crimes.

The Russian-Ukrainian war has been going on for seven years . But today, Ukrai­ni­ans are recei­ving less and less up-to-date infor­ma­ti­on and in-depth reports from the front and near-front zones in a modern inter­ac­ti­ve form.

The glo­bal English-speaking audi­ence recei­ves almost no infor­ma­ti­on about the cour­se of the mili­ta­ry conflict.

Why is that and what is the problem?

The pro­blem is that the­re are almost no repor­ters phy­si­cal­ly on the front lines. If they are, they work non-interactively or in a for­mu­laic way for TV audi­en­ces. Today, TV and social media audi­en­ces almost do not overlap.

I belie­ve that if Ukrai­ni­an civil socie­ty mana­ged to stop the war machi­ne of the Rus­si­an Fede­ra­ti­on with its vol­un­teer rise, then it is also able to stop its infor­ma­ti­on ons­laught. I have a huge field expe­ri­ence of repor­ting work. I am the first strea­mer of Euro­mai­dan , filmed and strea­med most of the events of the Revo­lu­ti­on of Digni­ty , inclu­ding the tra­gic days of Febru­a­ry 18 , 19, and 20, 2014. I cove­r­ed the events during the annex­a­ti­on of Cri­mea . From the begin­ning of the Rus­si­an aggres­si­on to the pre­sent day, I have been covering the Russian-Ukrainian war in Eas­tern Ukraine.

Today, I see an urgent need to crea­te an inno­va­ti­ve inter­ac­ti­ve media out­let about the Russian-Ukrainian war - Don­bas Front­li­ner. A media out­let that will pro­vi­de you with up-to-date infor­ma­ti­on in a modern inter­ac­ti­ve form while adhe­ring to high jour­na­listic standards.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CREATE THIS MEDIA?

Sechs Jah­re nach­dem er die Idee hatte…

The idea for the pro­ject aro­se in 2015, and the media began its work in May 2021. At that time, the goal of crea­ting the media was to draw atten­ti­on to the “for­got­ten war”, which at the time of the media launch had alrea­dy las­ted 8 years [ 7 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] [ 10 ] [ 11 ] [ 12 ] .

At the begin­ning of its acti­vi­ties, the Front­li­ner team con­sis­ted of two jour­na­lists, an SMM mana­ger , a video edi­tor, four trans­la­tors, and volunteers.

In Octo­ber 2021, the exhi­bi­ti­on “Don­bass. Front­li­ne” was held in Kyiv, whe­re pho­to­graphs taken by the Front­li­ner team during mis­si­ons to the ATO / JO zone were pre­sen­ted . In the same mon­th, media repor­ters par­ti­ci­pa­ted in the exhi­bi­ti­on of Ukrai­ni­an mili­ta­ry cor­re­spondents “13 Per­spec­ti­ves of War”, dedi­ca­ted to Ukrai­ni­an defen­ders [ 13 ] [ 14 ] [ 15 ] .

Front­li­ner has been col­la­bo­ra­ting with The New York Times sin­ce the win­ter of 2021. In 2022, on the eve of the inva­si­on, Andriy Dubchak worked with the NYT in Shchast , Novol­u­hans­ke , and Sever­odo­netsk , whe­re he encoun­te­red full-scale war [ 16 ] .

Sin­ce the begin­ning of the full-scale Rus­si­an inva­si­on of Ukrai­ne, Front­li­ner has been covering events in front­li­ne zones, in libe­ra­ted ter­ri­to­ries, and from the zone of direct com­bat. In par­ti­cu­lar, reports were pre­pa­red from the libe­ra­ted Kyiv, Khar­kiv, Myko­la­iv regi­ons, and sett­le­ments in Kher­son, Donetsk, and Luhansk regi­ons. [ 17 ]

Frontliner’s repor­ting and pho­tos are cited by glo­bal media out­lets, inclu­ding The New York Times [ 18 ] , Busi­ness Insi­der [ 19 ] , and The Washing­ton Post [ 20 ] .

Mate­ri­als from Frontliner’s work were inclu­ded in the sce­nes of the docu­men­ta­ry film “Win­ter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight For Free­dom” direc­ted by Yev­hen Afi­neevs­ky , which demons­tra­tes the ter­ri­ble events that Ukrai­ni­ans expe­ri­ence during the full-scale Rus­si­an inva­si­on of Ukraine
